What is meant by terraforming?
Terraforming of a planet, moon or another heavenly body is a process of purposely reshaping or modifying its temperature, atmosphere, surface topography or ecology to be similar to the environment of the Earth and make it habitable. As experienced on Earth, the environmental conditions of a planet can be transformed according to our requirements. Mars is the most reasonable candidate for terraforming as it has frozen water under its surface and most of its conditions match to that of Earth.

Is terraforming really possible?
The concept of terraforming seems far futuristic. But, did you know that humans possess the technology required for terraforming! But the funds required to do it are not available and no government is willing to provide them. NASA & SpaceX have been constantly researching on this subject. In near future, about a decade later or even soon the idea of terraforming would become a reality.
Why Mars?
Mars is the most Earth-like planet in the solar system. It is predicted that Mars was just like Earth in its early history. Mars once had water flowing on its surface just like the Earth. It is believed that Mars even has water below its surface frozen, in the form of ice. There are mountains and plateaus present on the red planet. It has a lot of iron in its soil so, it can be very fertile.
Other planets eligible for terraforming
Moon is our nearest heavenly body and it should be first colonized in the near future as it is in a very close proximity to Earth. We have been to moon and we have the knowledge about its environment and topography & also moon has reserves of precious metals like platinum below its surface.
Saturn's largest moon Titan is one of several candidates for possible future colonization of the outer solar system. Water has be discovered below its surface and research is still going on.
Methods of terraforming
There are several methods through the planetary conditions of a heavenly body can be altered. This projects could last for thousand years. Some methods proposed by NASA are as follows :-
1. Large orbital mirrors that will reflect sunlight and heat the Martian surface.
2. Greenhouse gas producing factories that will trap solar radiation and global warming will begin, triggering plant growth.
3. Smashing Ammonia-heavy asteroids into the planet to increase the greenhouse gas level.
When will be Mars colonized?
The subject of terraforming is a very sophisticated topic. It would take about 500 - 1000 years for this to eventuate and then only planets and heavenly bodies will become habitable.
