She drew the stem first and continued as she drew the thorns. Sharp, rough and large, she drew them with full attention. Erasing and smudging, creating with her imagination she drew them in honor of her fears. She thought of the harsh words she would often hear, she had thoughts of her wishes not being fulfilled, she kept on creating what looked like huge scary thorns.
"And now this is lovely," said the teacher looking at her work, "these thorns look as if they are just about to come alive. But where is the flower?"
"I don't know," she replied, "I got really engaged in creating the thorns."
"I guess you are right my dear. But remember, you are here to create flowers of hope and nourish the buds of your dreams. Don't waste yourself nurturing the thorns because you get what you focus on."
Ragini looked at her creation. All she could see was huge thorns adorning the stem with no flowers. She looked at it and sighed. How could she create flowers when all she could feel was the prick of thorns within her heart.
"And now," spoke Ms. Manya in the most irritated tone, "how am I going to take a bath?" She turned on the tap and icy cold water rushed down into the bucket.
"Ragini!" she screamed, "Why isn't the water warm?"
Ragini hurriedly came up to her only to find out that Ms. Manya had lost her cool again.
"This water is so cold," she yelled, "why isn't it warm? I need to take a bath."
"Mam," said Ragini, "there have been several power cuts since morning due to the weather. Shall I boil some water on the stove?"
In her mind she said, "Stop yelling now, will you? You should have made better arrangements for yourself. This geyser is nothing but a piece of junk which can't even store a little water."
Ms. Manya glared angrily at her as if reading her mind.
"Rush to the kitchen and boil it quick. And make sure that there is no dust floating over it."
Ms. Anita was getting dressed for dinner. She put on fresh flowers in her hair and applied her dark red lipstick. She wore her lucky locket and put on her black shawl.
"So," she said, "My dear cousin remembers her promise. Good for her that she didn't create any trouble for me or else.............."
