CHAPTER 1 Part 2
“Ma’am, Saturday,” I gasped, “The whole day I was with Priya, in her house. Her parents were out of town. It was just two of us the entire day.”
{Now please don’t ask me what we did the entire day!} My heart yelled. {What do lovers do when they are alone?}
“Are you aware that her parents were here yesterday to complain about the same? Apparently, their neighbors saw you sneaking in and they informed her parents later that night.” I was caught in the rigid grasp of her eyes as she continued adding salt to my injury. “And I reckon her parents had a word with your parents on the Saturday night itself. Her parents don’t want you to be anywhere near Priya. They don’t want you two to see each other anymore. ”
Unconsciousness was about to defile me. I was on the cusp of a panic-attack.
“Yes, Ma’am. I know.” {Those are the exact same things they told my parents that night. So, for heaven’s sake, stop repeating them.}
“Are you guys ‘girlfriend-boyfriend’ or something?” The curious lines on her forehead deepened further.
{What a stupid question! Isn’t it obvious that we are, you old lady?}
“Friends.” My eyes chose to dodge the judging rays emitting from her eyes. “We are very good friends!” My soul felt like bawling to the entire universe, ‘I love Priya, I love her!’
“We are really close friends, ma’am!” I plumped for the lie stating it twice with some more assurance in my voice.
Her cornered smile overruled the obvious lie.
“Do you realize the problems you might face because of the Saturday incident?” The first arrow was shot.
“The worst, umm,” I paused to clear my throat, “you would suspend me!” I could see Priya’s weeping face as I let out those words in a tremulous voice. I wasn’t worried much about what would happen to me but to her.
“And, are you okay with that?” The conversation was nothing less than an interrogation to me.
“I cannot do anything about it, ma’am.” I shrugged and continued, “I have made a mistake. I have to face the horrendous consequences.” I let out a helpless sigh. Loving someone is a crime in our modest, sophisticated, developed yet hopelessly degraded (regarding feelings), double-standard and hypocrite society.
“Look at me.” She tried to make me feel comfortable. “I know you are going through a lot lately. I cannot imagine how your parents would have responded when her parents were at your house. I simply don’t want to add up to it by suspending you. So don't be worried about that but it doesn’t mean I will overlook what has happened. It’s an incident too serious for a principal to ignore.”
{Yes! Of course! Loving someone is an incident too serious for anyone to ignore. Do one thing, kill me for I loved a soul!}
If only I could explode with my anger and destroy the world where love isn’t allowed to breathe!
Dead, uncanny silence for about 5 sec.
“Was she the one to invite you to her place?”
“No ma’am,” I replied instantly. “I insisted her for that. It was me, not her.” {You want to suspend me, go ahead! But dare you say a word about her!}
“Do you love her?”
{And now we are talking!}
This was the question she wanted to ask but less she knew about my tackling skills. I chose to remain silent. Sometimes, silence answers many questions for you in the best possible manner. ‘Like no one ever loved anyone, like no one ever will!’ My heart answered, with my mouth shut.
“Young man, you are just 17. Do you realize what your future would have been had she shouted on top of her voice when you guys were alone in her house?”
I felt an eccentric peace in being unresponsive. {My Priya would never do that to me, old lady!} More than anything I felt like mocking the stupid question, but I was in no position to reveal my true feelings.
“Now listen to me carefully. Whatever I am going to tell you, it’s very important. Don’t let anyone know a word about it. Not even Priya.” She leaned forward. Her lowered voice suggested something really important was about to come out.
I nodded affirmatively.
Principal Jennet didn’t quite seem like what the rumors had portrayed her to be. Though I was afraid, the fear wasn’t killing me to death as I had imagined.
“Her father seemed disheartened.” She stated. Her voice intended to make me feel guilty.
{Yeah! Tell me something new. I know we have done the most abhorrent crime of the century that brought disgrace to our families. The most sinful crime of all - LOVE!} I wanted to shout at her sarcastically. Wise enough of me, I opted to remain silent.
“Her father seemed disheartened. He was ashamed of his daughter’s actions. And the thing which he told me about Priya has really rocked me off.”
{I don’t give a shit about what you people think!}
I wasn’t attentive to her until the next sentence hit me.
“Do you know that she was involved with two other guys before you, in the last three years?”
That sentence chopped my heart in the worst demonic way possible.
Visualize the condition of a city victimized by a fierce hurricane followed by a havoc-wreaking blizzard and finally a demolishing earthquake! It would still, arguably, appear much better than the deteriorated condition of my heart.
{What the hell did you just say? Two guys? That can’t be true. It’s absurd.}
I went bizarre. I felt lifeless and terrible. I could feel my soul being doped with misery. I felt moisture on my hands. The agony of my heart had finally transformed itself into tears.
“Do you know about these guys?” She implored.
I couldn’t answer. The inferno of pain had sealed my lips. The very purpose of the soul, to surge life into the body, was wrenched by the trembling emotions, I wish no one would ever experience. I felt the baronial pain of losing everything. I wanted to speak, but I couldn’t. Words had dried up. My mouth wasn’t responding to the brain’s signals. All I could do was stammer, trying my best not to cry out loud.
“Have some water. And relax.” I had lost my senses. She realized that, anyone with half a brain would.
I sipped a little water. Wiped my tears and looked towards her. Her sympathetic eyes seemed to be garnering my condition.
“M-m-a’am…” I stuttered before tears trashed the gates of embarrassment.
