The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated on Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of the Falgun Mass. It is believed that the beginning of creation was from this day. It is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva's marriage took place with Mata Parvati. Mahashivratri is considered to be the most important of the 12 Shivratri that occur in the year. Another story associated with this day is that on the day of Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva had kept the poison called Kalkut in his throat, which came out during the sea churning.
