To worship God, one needs to have love in the heart and love is attained only through sacrifice and selflessness. Once there was a dervish man (muslim religious order) who dances rigorously in front of each mosque. He was being asked why he worships God through dance? His reply was beyond belief “to worship God one has to kill self, and dancing has the passion as well as life to kill the self, where self dies out, all your problems dies, where the self is not, love and God persists.“
It was a kind of Praise dance. It means expressing the devotion and reverence through movements. This form of worship is used by some Christian churches to articulate the spirit of God through bodily movements and show thankfulness to the Lord in ancient times. However it was forced out from the Christian churches during ancient times, but again re-entered during 20th century. Praise dance includes various diverse forms of dance like jazz, traditional or modern ballet, lyrical, Zumba and hip hop dancing.
Today, praise dance can be seen performed by people of diverse age groups. You can even find professional dance schools and companies offering praise dancing classes for young and old alike.
“Dancing” basically consists of three inter wine expressions: choreographed, interpretive and spontaneous. God has completed us and we can move in harmony by following his physical laws. As we capitulate our bodies and hearts to God who is love, we experience a ‘GUSH’, a gracefulness in body movement, a graciousness in heart – God’s love flowing through us, the body and its movement are the key tools that work toward the unity of self.”
Dancing is a visual ministry, however, the focus must remain on worshiping God – a form of ART, rather than drawing attention to self. When practiced in this way, dance is a master piece of art form that can communicate truth, glory and edifying others. The music, and dance must be united in harmony. Finally, it is important to understand that dance in the context of worship is not simply self-expression. It should be done in a way that is helpful to the entire congregation. We should love dancing because it’s the next thing to being able to fly. It gives life, healing, freedom, joy, peace, resulting in an overflowing of praise and gratitude in his goodness and love.
