How to Treat Scale on Swimming Pools
When we think of summer, we hope to dive into the backyard in the clean, cold water of our pool. But with heavy use, the pools may seem less clean in the middle of the season. A major problem for pool owners is the scale: the white and calcified structure that forms on the tiles and other surfaces of the pool. The ladder can be removed, but it requires work and dedication.
Things you need
- Putty knife or scraper
- Commercial scale remover
- Small scrub brush
instructions
Scrape the scale of the tiles or other exposed surfaces with a spatula or screwdriver. Scrape the surface as carefully as possible to avoid scratching the tile or surface. If enough scale is removed after this step, stop. Apply a commercial cleaner designed to remove lime. Use a cleaning agent suitable for your specific type of pool. If your pool has a vinyl siding, you need softer chemicals than a gypsum-lined pool, so you should use a vinyl-based product. Do not drain as much water as necessary to operate the scale. Use a brush and apply the product according to the instructions to remove the scale.
Buy hydrochloric acid in your pool shop for the size of your pool. The use of protective gloves, goggles, and clothing such as hydrochloric acid can easily burn the skin and eyes. Read and follow all instructions carefully to avoid hurting yourself and your pool. Apply equal amounts of water and hydrochloric acid to a clean spray bottle on a softer scale. It is best to try a soft solution first. For a harder scale, pour hydrochloric acid directly into the spray bottle and use it at full power. Spray the solution on a ladder on the surface of the water, rinse with a small brush and rinse with water from the pool. Reapply if essential.
Drain your pool to remove lime below the surface or at the bottom of the pool. Pull the hydrostatic vent plugs and pump the water into a rain drain. Contact the local water company for proper instructions for wastewater disposal. While the pool is empty, brush it with a brush to clean the algae or dirt.
Pour a liter of water in a shower. Add one gallon of hydrochloric acid and shake to mix. Pipe the walls of the pool with a pipe without a mouth. This prevents the acid from touching your skin. Work on three-meter sections and pour the mixture into the wall. Bone the wall for thirty seconds with an acid brush. Rinse the wall immediately and clean carefully to avoid damage. Advance for the whole group while repeating this procedure. If the results are not satisfactory, repeat the process a second time, with a stronger mix. Remember that using too much acid can damage the patch. Clean the bottom of the pool at the end, in the same way.
Neutralize the acid that remains at the bottom of the pool. Pour 2 pounds of sodium carbonate into the bottom of the pool for every gallon of acid you just used. Add the sodium carbonate with a stick or long handle. Pump the remaining solution with a submersible pump. Rinse the bottom of the pool carefully with the hose.
